Storm Readiness Checklist

A simple web version of what residents need most often, especially on mobile.

Before the Storm

  • Build or refresh your hurricane supply kit.
  • Review medication, oxygen, mobility, pet, and transportation needs.
  • Secure patio furniture, loose outdoor items, shutters, and screens.
  • Charge phones, battery packs, flashlights, and weather radios.
  • Save insurance, ID, medical, and association documents in a dry place.

During the Storm

  • Monitor official City, County, and National Hurricane Center updates.
  • Stay indoors and away from windows until officials say conditions are safe.
  • Use flashlights instead of candles whenever possible.
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed during power loss.
  • Use phones for necessary calls so batteries and networks last longer.

After the Storm

  • Do not drive or walk through flood water.
  • Keep generators outside, away from doors, windows, and garages.
  • Photograph damage before cleanup when it is safe to do so.
  • Follow City and County instructions for debris pickup and road closures.
  • Check on neighbors who may need help, especially older residents.

Special Needs, Medical, and Mobility Planning

Residents who depend on electricity, medical equipment, oxygen, regular treatments, mobility assistance, or caregiver support should plan early and register with the appropriate County or Florida Department of Health programs before a storm threatens the area.

  • Register early for special needs shelter consideration if you need medical monitoring beyond a general shelter.
  • Discuss hurricane plans with doctors, caregivers, pharmacies, dialysis providers, and oxygen suppliers.
  • Make transportation arrangements before watches or warnings are issued.
